The Chester Fritz Library subscribes to many article databases, some covering general topics and others indexing specialized subjects. If you know the name of a particular database, there is an alphabetical listing at Article Indexes & Databases. If you do not know the specific name, the following questions/answers may help in finding articles in magazines or journals. If they do not answer your specific question, "Ask a Librarian" or call us (777-4629). If you're in the library, stop at the reference desk.

Question 1 (Articles for a composition class)
I need a few articles on global warming for my composition class. What database should I use?.

Answer
Select MasterFILE Premier for general and popular magazine articles or Academic Search Premier for scholarly journal articles. Enter your terms in the empty box. Click on Search. You should see a list of articles in either magazines or journals. You can also limit your search by clicking on the 'Refine the Search'. If you see 'HTML FULL TEXT' or 'PDF FULL TEXT,' the full-text of the article is available. The Complete List of Databases has a number of multidisciplinary databases (databases which cover a number of subjects) and may provide additional articles about your topic. Some of these are full-text or full-page image.

Question 2 (Articles for a psychology class)
My topic is somewhat specific. I need to locate studies about Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Do you have any databases specifically related to psychology?

Answer

Resources by Subject lists academic departments on campus. Clicking on Psychology will list databases devoted solely to psychology. If the database you choose defaults to advanced search, you will find a number of options in the drop-down box to select (author, abstract, title, etc.). You will also find a number of other useful resources at this link.

Question 3 (Articles For a Business class)
I need to find company and industry information. Where should I look?

Answer

Click on Resources by Subject. Click on Business. You will find a list of business databases which will provide information on companies and industries. EBSCOhost (Business Source Premier) provides easy access to company or industry information. To search, enter your term or terms. If researching a specific industry report, arrow down to publication type and select industry report. If you need information on a company, choose the tab (at the top) labeled "Company Profile." Enter a company name. You can click immediately on "DataMonitor Report" or click directly on the company name to see brief description of company, NAICS number(s), and the company's products/services.

Question 4

I located an article but it is not full-text. How do I get a copy of the article?

Answer

Try locating the article via Electronic Journals. Here you can enter the exact name of the journal or a keyword from the journal title. Many of the journal titles will link to the specific database; others will link directly to the journal. If this method does not provide full-text, try the next step.

Journals and magazines at the Chester Fritz Library are shelved by call number. Search the ODIN Library Catalog:Chester Fritz Library for the call number of the magazine or journal where your article appears. You may find a hypertext link for your journal or magazine. This may lead to a full-text article. If there is no link, check to see if we have the specific issue you need. Our journals and magazines are located on both first and second floor (depending on call number). Remember to also be aware of format - it's possible the issue may be on microfiche or microfilm.

Question 5

I checked ODIN (book catalog) and Chester Fritz Library does not own the journal. What can I do?

Answer

Any UND student, faculty, or staff can request interlibrary loan. We will try to obtain the article from another library. A convenient online interlibrary loan form can be accessed from the Library's homepage. Provide as much information as you can about the article. It will speed your request. The Interlibrary Loan Department will make every effort possible to obtain a copy of the article and will notify you when it becomes available.
