CHESTER
FRITZ LIBRARY
-- The Chester
Fritz Library opened in the fall of 1961. It was financed
by a $1 million dollar gifts from Chester Fritz and
$200,000 from the North Dakota Legislature for equipment.
In 1982, an addition to the building was completed.
It is the largest library in the state with a gross
floor space over 150,000 square feet. The library's
distinguishing tower rises 82 feet above University
Avenue.
Chester Fritz began his education
in a one-room rural school in Traill County and attended
UND from 1908-1910. He completed his baccalaureate
degree at the University of Washington and became
an international investment banker. In 1951, UND awarded
Fritz an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Fritz donated
an additional million dollars to the University for
the construction of an auditorium in 1965.
