About Patents and Trademarks

Patent Registration

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Arlington, VA, advises that inventors seek the advice of a patent and trademark attorney instead of attempting to complete a patent application independently. The complexity of the language and specifications usually requires professional assistance. Two options exist: the non-provisional application, which begins the examination process that may lead to a patent; and the provisional application, which establishes a filing date, but does not begin the examination process.

Trademark Registration

A North Dakota state trademark application can be obtained from our office or the Secretary of State's Office (Phone: (701) 328-4284 or Fax: (701) 328-2992).

Federal trademark applications are online at http://www.uspto.gov

Copyright Registration

Copyright registration forms can be obtained from our office. Each application requires a fee, regardless of the form of artwork. The U.S Copyright Office at the Library of Congress has Copyright Registration Procedures and forms online.
