With the end of World War I, he was discharged on December 20, 1918.

He married Thelma Ann Lowe of Westhope, North Dakota, in February 1920. The couple had seven children: Ada, Ole, Alda, Constance, Carol, Oliver, and Lowe. Sampson operated the Lazy SS Ranch, a farm in Triumph Township, Ramsey County.
