The first family to move to Cooperstown, North Dakota, was Knud Thompson with his wife and two children. Mrs. Thompson was a sister to Mr. Odegard, who joined Mr. Thompson in a business partnership. The first business in town, known as the Odegard and Thompson Store, was on Burrell Avenue, block 73, lot 7. The business was a general merchandise store. While in business, Grace and Oscar, children of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, were born in the living quarters in the back of the store.
The store was bought out by Mr. Syverson, brother-in-law to Mr. Thompson and Mr. Odegard, in 1884. The store was moved to lot 24 and used as a warehouse while the Syverson Block was being built. The store was used for various purposes until it was torn down around 1980. Original financial ledgers use the title of "Odegard and Thompson"; town history records, however, use the name "Thompson and Odegard".
The Odegard and Thompson Store Records consist of photocopied financial ledgers from 1882-1883. The original ledgers are housed at the Minnesota Historical Society.
One oversize folder consisting of Odegard and Thompson Store financial ledgers, dated 1882-1883, was separated and placed in the Oversize File Cabinets.
