SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Joseph Bell DeRemer Papers consists of building specifications, blueprints, and one photograph for the McCanna Family home, McCanna, North Dakota. The building was contracted by the McCanna Farming Company, and designed by Joseph Bell DeRemer in 1920.

The McCanna Family were pioneer farmers in Elm Grove Township, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. In 1881, Simon and David McCanna homesteaded and bought government land on the St. Paul Railroad right of way. The brothers formed a partnership for the purpose of farming, and they specialized in spring wheat, barley, durum, and oats. In 1890, the McCanna Farming Company began raising purebred Aberdeen Angus and Durham cattle. Simon McCanna founded a community that would later become the town of McCanna.
