SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Thomas S. Kleppe Papers dates from 1966-1976, although the bulk of the material dates from Kleppe's tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Interior, from 1975-1977. The material has been divided into four series as follows:

Series I: Calendar, Invitation and Regret Files
The first series consists of Kleppe's calendar, invitation and regret files. Only the regret files are complete. The calendars are day by day appointment schedules for Kleppe's days when he was not traveling.

Series II: Trips
The second series contains travel schedules and supporting papers on various trips made while Kleppe was Secretary of the Interior. A number of the files contain briefing papers on issues likely to be mentioned at press conferences on the trip.

Series III: Correspondence
The final series contains correspondence dating from 1966-1977. This includes letters from his time both as a United States Congressman, as well as Secretary of the Interior. The alphabetical files were not complete.

Series IV: Memorabilia
This series consists primarily of memorabilia relating to the periods he served as head of the Small Business Administration and the Secretary of the Interior, although some items pertaining to his two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives are also included. Various plaques, certificates, and trophies make up a large portion of the contents but photographs also figure prominently. In order to conserve space, many of the plaques were removed from their wooden backing, so that only the metal facing is preserved. In a few instances, photocopies have been kept in lieu of the original plaque.
