HISTORICAL SKETCH

the small voice (no capitalization) is a Catholic newsletter, occasionally published and designed to cover significant events not included in Catholic Action News, the official publication of the Fargo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. The sometimes controversial newsletter began publication in 1972. Robert L. Branconnier, who at one time was pastor of the Newman Center at the University of North Dakota, served as editor of the small voice from 1972-1977. In 1977, Jerome Lamb of Fargo became the editor.

The newsletter contains editorials, special reports and feature guest articles concerning a wide range of issues on both the state and national levels. Politics and religion in society, the Vietnam engagement and war tax resistance, nuclear power and the arms race, revenue sharing, the effects of strip mining in North Dakota, minority rights, women in the priesthood, the actions of the National Federation of Priests Councils, are a few of the topics discussed in the small voice.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

In addition to the small voice, the collection also consists of several issues of Charge: the Windmills are Weakening, a predecessor of the small voice. Several issues of another publication, The Bread is Rising are also included.
