ACQUISITION: This addition to the Fred G. Aandahl Papers was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Louise Aandahl Stockman, Fargo, North Dakota on October 9, 2002 (Acc.#2002-2582).

ACCESS: Available for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Fred G. Aandahl Papers consists of a briefing book for presidential appointees in the Department of the Interior from 1953-1961. Following a table of contents, the book is divided into six sections:

  1. Outline: an outline of briefing program, including topics and assignments for oral briefing, and a schedule
  2. Organization: organization chart of the United States government and of the Department of the Interior
  3. Outside Relations: outlines the role of the Secretary of the Interior as a central and control point for the Department of the Interior with Congress, the White House, the Bureau of the Budget, the press, and the general public.
  4. Budget and Manpower: Describes the Federal Budget and appropriation process to provide a background for officials who participate in budgetary preparations, hearings before the Bureau of the Budget, and congressional appointment systems
  5. Personal: Covers personnel policies in regards to political activities, federal corruption practices, pay, and other financial matters
  6. Key Officials: Biographical sketches of key officials in the Department of the Interior
