SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the William L. Nuessle Papers dates from 1900-1959, and has been divided into four series as follows:

SERIES I: Financial
Correspondence and related materials dealing with Nuessle's farming ventures in the Bismarck, North Dakota, area. The series also contains Federal Income Tax forms, and a Nuessle Estate financial statement. The correspondence files are arranged alphabetically by name of the correspondent. The material dates from 1914-1959. Box 6, Folder 1 - Box 7, Folder 2

SERIES II: Judicial
This series includes correspondence relating to judicial matters of the Sixth Judicial District of North Dakota from 1919-22 and the Supreme Court of North Dakota from 1949-50. Also included are materials relating to Nuessle's controversial role in the 1919 North Dakota Coal Strike. The files are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent, and date from 1919-22 and 1949-50. Box 7, Folder 3 - Box 8, Folder 8

SERIES III: General Correspondence
Correspondence and related materials of a personal and general nature. Nine files deal solely with family correspondence, while fifteen files include correspondence with Admiral Homer N. Wallin. Nuessle often reflects upon the state of agriculture and politics in both North Dakota and the United States in these letters. The files are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent or type of material with the exception of the nine family files which are arranged chronologically. The years covered range from 1933-59. Box 8, Folder 9 - Box 9, Folder 24

SERIES IV: Political
Correspondence and related materials of a political nature. Includes correspondence dealing with Nuessle's reelection efforts to the Supreme Court in 1934 and 1940, and offers a view of the organizational mechanics of putting together a "No-Party" campaign. The 1934 material is of particular interest in its reflection of the mood of public opinion following the decision to remove Governor William Langer. The series also contains files on the creation of the State Board of Higher Education in 1938 and the Garrison Dam Indian controversy of 1947. The files are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent or topic of material. The years covered are 1934-47. Box 9, Folder 25 - Box 10, Folder 41

37 photographs were separated and added to the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection. Most of the photographs depict a 1952 meeting of the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference, of which Nuessle was a member.
