SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Thomas F. Kane Papers consists of a letter written by Kane’s wife, Dorothy, to Nell Sawyer of Olivet, Michigan. Prior to his becoming the fifth President of the University of North Dakota, Thomas Kane served as President of Olivet College from 1916-1918. The letter is postmarked April 22, 1918, thirteen days after Thomas Kane was inaugurated at UND. In the letter, Mrs. Kane discusses concerts and other events on campus, as well as the state of the President’s house. She also expresses her regrets that she and her husband left Olivet College so hastily during the “vacation season.” Also contained is a typewritten version of the letter, transcribed by Sandy Slater, Head of the Department of Special Collections.

The addition also includes several photocopied documents related to the history of Olivet College and Thomas Kane: the 1915-16 Olivet College Catalogue which announces Kane’s presidency; selections from Olivet: One Hundred Years, 1844-1944; and printouts from the Olivet College website.
