   INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: This addition to the Stuart McDonald Papers was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Robert McConn, Grand Forks, North Dakota, on June 29, 2006 . Material was also transferred from the Bryce Streibel Papers, OGL#1339 (Acc.#2006-2822 ).

 

ACCESS: Available for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Stuart McDonald Papers consists of four original McDonald cartoons, each of which were published in the Grand Forks Herald from 1962-1967. The first three cartoons were inscribed by McDonald and given to Robert McConn, while the final cartoon was inscribed and gifted by McDonald to North Dakota State Senator Bryce Streibel.

 

All of Stuart McDonald's cartoons have been digitized, and can be viewed at the Chester Fritz Library Digital Collections.

“'Til Death Do Us Part”

August 5, 1962

 

Cartoon depicts various people helping to carry numbers, while a man in a suit holds a sign "The Nat'l Debt." Before acting on a proposed tax cut, members of Congress call for a slash in debt.

 

Inscription: “To my friend Bob McConn with best wishes”

“Can It Happen Again?”

September 30, 1962

 

Cartoon depicts Governor Guy sneaking up the steps to the "Governor's Mansion" while trying not to awaken the "G.O.P." Elephant. In the gubernatorial race, Governor William L. Guy is up for re-election against his Republican opponent Mark Andrews.

 

Inscription: “To Bernie McConn with every best wish”

“Second Class Citizen”

April 3, 1966

 

Cartoon depicts a man lying down, reading the paper with the headline "Election Tuesday," saying "I don't think I'll bother to vote." On April 5, 1966 voters will elect a municipal judge, two park commissioners, and seven councilmen.

“The Monster and the Strategists”

January 15, 1967

 

Cartoon depicts "Lips" and "Streibel" trying to tame "Tax Problems." Senate Majority Leader Evan Lips from Bismarck , North Dakota , and House Majority Leader Bryce Streibel from Fessenden , North Dakota , are optimistic that by next week the state's tax problem will be solved.
