SIZE: 8.25 linear feet

INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: This addition to the Stuart McDonald Papers was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Stuart McDonald, Newburgh, Indiana, on January 19, 2006 (Acc.# 2006-2812).

ACCESS: Available for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Stuart McDonald Papers dates from 1944 to 2003, and consists of original copies of the North Dakotan, Stuart McDonald's personal collection of cartooning books, and lessons from two correspondence cartooning programs.

The 35 original copies of the North Dakotan date from May 1965 to September 1968. Each issue includes a Stuart McDonald editorial cartoon. Four issues feature a McDonald cartoon as the cover. Some of these cartoons were also published in the Grand Forks Herald.

Stuart McDonald's personal collection of cartooning books includes works authored by or about other cartoonists. There are compilations of a single cartoonist's work, anthologies containing cartoons by various artists, and biographies of distinguished cartoonists. Many of the books have been inscribed to McDonald by the authors. McDonald's cartoon "Infant's Message to Man" is included on page 49 of the Fourth International Salon of Cartoons 1967. Also, his cartoon titled "My Son, My Son" is included on page 15 of A Nation Grieved: The Kennedy Assassination in Editorial Cartoons.

Also included in this addition are lessons from two correspondence cartooning programs. McDonald participated in The Famous Artists Cartoon Course from 1960 to 1962; included are lesson books, McDonald's coursework, and feedback from the instructors. The second correspondence cartooning program is the Art Instruction Schools Courses in Advertising Art, Illustrating, Painting, and Cartooning. There is no indication that McDonald participated in this program.
