SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The addition to the Usher L. Burdick Papers consists of photocopied material, including Burdick's 1949 brief regarding the legality of building Garrison Dam and correspondence written by Burdick's elder sister Ida. The letters are dated 1882-1883, and are written to Altie Eliza Baken who married the eldest Burdick son. The correspondence describes the Burdick family move to Dakota Territory and the lot many young women found themselves in during the late 19th century.

The Garrison brief is photocopied from the Senator Carl Hayden Collection, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. Eugene Burdick, Williston, North Dakota retains the original Ida Burdick correspondence.
