SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Edward and Elmer T. Lian Papers consists of manuscripts by Elmer T. Lian and Charles E. Stabo. Stabo's manuscript, The Saga of the Great Depression, concerns his family's struggle through the Depression. It tells the story of how one family faced and dealt with the economic and social changes brought on by the Depression, and is set in Cavalier County, North Dakota.

The Lian portion of the addition consists of five manuscripts. Two concern World War II: American Air Force Pilot, Prisoner-of-War and The True Stories of Selected North Dakota War Veterans: A True Story of One Man, One Crew, and One Plane, in one of the Great Air Battles Over “Fortress Europe.” The first is a photo manuscript about Stalag Luft I, Barth-Vogelsang, Germany and the American Air Force POWs held there. The second concerns a bombing mission for which Lian was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The last three manuscripts examine North Dakota history through photocopied photographs, and are entitled North Dakota 100 Years: Years of Hope, Years of Progress, Years of Pain.
