The Grand Forks Woman's Club was founded on December 5th, 1963 in the home of Mrs. Kenneth C. Lowe. Besides Mrs. Lowe, other charter members included: Mrs. Walter Dougherty, Mrs. Robert Colwell, Mrs. Urban Larson, Mrs. Lowell Rasmussen, and Mrs. C. F. Swanke. It was federated with the General Federation of Woman's Clubs on January 10th, 1964.
The Grand Forks Woman's Club meetings were usually the first Thursday of every month, except in July and August, when they convened for summer. At the meetings they did several things, of which usually a member or a guest speaker talked on a subject. The women of this club volunteered at many places, such as the Grand Forks Public Library, the Day Care Center for Retarded Children, St. Anne's Guest House, the Red Cross, and the Valley Day Care Center. In 2002, the North Dakota Federation of Woman's Clubs raised funds to erect a bronze Sakakawea statue at the Statuary Hall in Washington D.C. This statue is a copy of the one on state capitol grounds in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The Grand Forks Woman's Club resigned from the Greater Federation of Woman's Clubs on April 24, 2005, although was considered an active club until their dues expired on December 30, 2005.
This collection contains four scrapbooks. The first scrapbook has a green cover and is titled "A History of the Grand Forks Woman's Club". This scrapbook dates from 1963 to 1968, and contains mostly newspaper clippings regarding the club, as well as newspaper clippings about the North Dakota Federation of Woman's Clubs (NDFWC). This scrapbook also contains correspondence, programs, photographs, certificates and ephemera.
The second scrapbook has a red cover and dates from 1963 to 1984. This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, and also contains NDFWC information regarding officers and the national convention. This scrapbook also contains programs, photographs, and ephemera.
The third scrapbook has a white cover with the words "Grand Forks" emblazoned on the front. This scrapbook contains information about the 1978-1980 Community Improvement Project for the Grand Forks Woman's Club. The club organized displays at Public Library regarding "interesting subjects… to inform and entertain the public." Topics included University of North Dakota pottery, Tanzania, and Greece.
The last scrapbook dates from 1970-2005, and has the words, "GFWC Unity in Diversity" printed on the cover. It has annual reports, newspaper clippings and correspondence about the Grand Forks Woman's Club. The correspondence included the club's resignation to the NDFWC dated April 24, 2005, as well as the NDFWC's return letter accepting the club's resignation. Other newspaper clippings regarded the erection of the Sakakawea statue through the help of the NDFWC, as well as pamphlets about the 75th Anniversary of the General Federation of Woman's Clubs, and other state and national convention programs.
Also included in the collection are meeting minutes from 1992 to 2005, a budgetary ledger from 1979 to 2005, and a 2004 directory of the Greater Federation of Woman's Clubs.
