Organized by Norwegian immigrants on January 16, 1895 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the purpose of fostering mutual aid within the Norwegian-American community, the society now has four hundred local lodges spread throughout the United States, Canada, and Norway. In addition, Sons of Norway also offers life insurance benefits to its members, as well as various academic and cultural scholarships designed to promote familiarity with Norwegian language and culture. District IV consists of Sons of Norway lodges located in the states of North Dakota and Montana, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The collection consists of publications, including District IV directories, charters and constitutions, and historical books; minutes and papers from the meetings of the district board; minutes, publications, and other documents relating to district and international conventions; secretarial records; treasurer records; and various other assorted materials.
