SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Webster Merrifield Papers dates from 1909-1916. Included is the text of remarks delivered by Merrifield at the memorial service for Professor John Macnie on November 2, 1909. Also included are three letters from Merrifield to the William Nuessle family of Bismarck. William L. Nuessle graduated from UND in 1899, and maintained a strong friendship with Merrifield. The correspondence includes one letter dated January 15, 1915, from Merrifield to William Nuessle, Jr.; one letter dated December 13, 1915, to William Nuessle, Sr.; and one letter dated January 15, 1916, to Robert and William Nuessle, Jr. This final letter was written only one week before Merrifield died on January 22, 1916.

Three newspaper clippings reporting Merrifield’s death, the program from the UND memorial service for Merrifield, and “Webster Merrifield: An Appreciation” from the March 1917 University of North Dakota Departmental Bulletins, is also included.
