Blackwood Press Publications was started in 2002 by Joseph Greenwood as a small, independent publishing operation. The publishing company has branched out to include a monthly publication (Dub), books, and sound recordings. The monthly publication, Dub, was first published in March 2002. Each issue of the publication contains works by authors and artists which are chosen by Greenwood for publication.
Blackwood Press anticipated having several books in print available for purchase by the general public. The Nectar of Murder, written by Nicholas Zeman was released in paperback. An Ode To A Statue was written by the publisher, Joseph Greenwood, and will have editions in both paperback and hardcover which were planned to be released in the fall of 2003. Both books are anthologies of poetry. Blackwood Press also intends to add sound recordings to their list of products. The recordings will include artists such as "Sixto Mercedes," "the Sunday mornings," and "Jim Bob Leevers.
Joseph Greenwood, the publisher and creative force behind Blackwood Press, is a native of North Dakota who graduated from UND in 2000 with a degree in business. He is interested in remaining in North Dakota to pursue his writing and publishing. He currently lives in Grand Forks with his wife, and works in construction.
The Blackwood Press Publications Collection primarily contains issues of the monthly publication, Dub. This monthly literary magazine's first edition featured only poetry, with original artwork on both the front and back cover. Later issues changed scope, featuring prose as well as the poetry. Dub's third edition, published in May 2002 featured work by only one author, Colleen Warner, and the back pages of the publication featured a painting. This idea of an issue featuring works by one author continued, seeing similar volumes released as issues three and four of volume 4, but with work by Edvarg Kabylvlatk. These issues were also the first to feature artwork, also by the author, outside of the covers or back pages. Volume 3 was released as a bound collection containing issues one and two, as well as an audio CD insert entitled "The End Of Revelations." All issues were created by having the copy generated onto a computer, and then were printed out using inexpensive software. The presentation of each issue varies, using different colors and textures of paper and also experimenting with various types of binding which include hemp, string, metal screws, and pipe cleaners. Also included is a May 10, 2002 newspaper clipping from the Grand Forks Herald, which briefly describes Dub and gives a bit of background information about how and why it was started, as well as some additional information about Joseph Greenwood himself.
