BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Galen L. Geer served as a soldier journalist during the Korean War and was awarded a Korean Service Medal and an Army Commendation Medal. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Southern Colorado . He worked in editorial positions for Soldier of Fortune , African Hunter and Sporting Tales magazines. He also worked as an English Instructor at the University of North Dakota and Northland Community and Technical College .

In 2002 he received an Excellence in Craft award from the Outdoor Writers Association of America for his story, “One Shot Kill,” which was included in his first collection of fictional stories, Last Supper in Paradise (Willowgate Press, 2003). The following year, he was again recognized for Excellence in Craft from the Outdoor Writers Association of America for his story “The Fifth Day,” which was published in Mule Deer Magazine .

His nonfiction publications are: Meat on the Table: Modern Small Game Hunting (Paladin Press, 1985); The Wildlife Observer's Eyes: Optical Equipment for Observing Nature (Menasha Ridge Press, 1990); The Crossbow as Modern Weapon (Firepower Publications, 1984); Canteen Cup Cookery (Desert Publications, 1985).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

 The Galen L. Geer Papers date from 1967 to 2006. They consist of the September and October 1980 issues of Soldier of Fortune magazine, which include the signed articles “Assignment Afghanistan” and “Jihad in Afghanistan .” The first article deals with a new weapon, the AKS-74 and its ammunition. The second is a historical account of political instability in Afghanistan with an emphasis on tribal factions. These articles are the result of eleven days Geer spent with Afghan rebels engaged in a holy war with the Russians. Also included are several pieces of biographical information and a facsimile copy of P.A. Clancey's 1967 book, Gamebirds of Southern Africa.
