INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: This addition to the Judge Bruce Van Sickle Papers was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Bruce Van Sickle, Bismarck, North Dakota, on January 22, 2002 (Acc.#2002-2552).

ACCESS: Available for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Judge Bruce Van Sickle Papers consists primarily of documents relating to two cases that were tried before his bench – Chapman v. Meier and The Spirit Lake Indian Tribe, formerly known as the Devils Lake Sioux Tribe v. State of North Dakota et al. (referred to hereafter as Sioux v. ND ). Chapman v. Meier involved the reapportionment of representation within the North Dakota Legislature to match population shifts within the state. Sioux v. ND was an effort on the part of the Spirit Lake Native Americans to gain legal title to the Devils Lake lakebed. In addition to the aforementioned materials, this addition also includes a number of newspaper clippings, speeches and publications by Van Sickle, information about conferences he attended and honors accorded to him, as well as some materials pertaining to Association of Retarded Citizens v. State of North Dakota ( ARC v. ND ) – probably Van Sickle's most prominent case. A variety of miscellaneous documents have also been included. Researchers wishing to understand Van Sickle's judicial philosophy may wish to specifically consult his Sentence Summaries.
