The first issue of The Prairie Naturalist appeared in 1968 with a March cover date. Since its inception, this quarterly peer-reviewed journal has been published by the University of North Dakota's Institute for Ecological Studies on behalf of the North Dakota Natural Science Society. The Society established The Prairie Naturalist as a tool for communicating research on the natural history and environment of North Dakota and the Great Plains region. Issues feature full-length articles detailing scientific research and also include book reviews and short notes. Submitted articles are reviewed by experts in relevant fields. Abstracts of published articles are included in several professional abstract journals, including Biological Abstracts, Fisheries Review and Wildlife Review. Dr. Paul B. Kannowski of the Institute for Ecological Studies at the University of North Dakota has been the editor of the journal since its first issue.
