INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: This addition to the 1997 Red River Valley Flood Collection was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Lt. Byron Seiber, Grand Forks Police Department, Grand Forks, North Dakota (Acc.# 2005-2728).

ACCESS: Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the 1997 Red River Valley Flood Collection dates from 1993-1997 with the bulk of the material dating from April-May 1997. The addition consists of materials related to the events leading up to, during, and directly after the flood. The material includes press releases from city, state, and national organizations with the majority of them from the Grand Forks Emergency Management Committee. The press releases contain information about the flood and what governmental organizations were doing.

Also in the addition is a statement by Mayor Pat Owens on the day the river crested, a chronology of flood outlooks and forecasting activities for 1997, and Grand Forks flood and evacuation plans. Schedules when President Bill Clinton, Elizabeth Dole, and James Lee Witt came to visit Grand Forks are also included. This addition also contains materials about extra help and social services after the flood, the National Weather Service flood statements, cartoons and jokes about the flood, and five photographs.

One oversized folder was separated and placed in the oversize folder cabinets. The folder contains a Grand Forks street map, power map, water service availability map, and a sanitary sewer availability map.
