ACQUISITION:The 1997 Red River Valley Flood Collection was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by a variety of sources including, but not limited to, the city of Grand Forks, Jan Orvik, and Alan Draves. Deposits to the collection have been made from 1997 to November 1999.

The winter of 1996-1997 was unusually harsh as eight blizzards struck the Grand Forks region of the Red River Valley. The last and one of the most severe, Blizzard Hannah, occurred April 4-6, 1997. When the snow began to melt and the Red River began to rise, the people of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks began flood preparations in earnest. However, the cities' preparations did not anticipate the extent of the flooding. Flood preparations were made to protect the cities from a 49-foot flood crest; the actual flood crested at 54.33 feet on Tuesday, April 22. On April 18, the Red River began to overrun temporary dikes along the river. Those areas in immediate danger were evacuated. As the river continued to rise without any hint of slowing, the entire cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks were evacuated on April 19. On that same day, a fire broke out in downtown Grand Forks that destroyed 11 buildings, including one entire block. During the evacuation, University of North Dakota and city of Grand Forks employees remained behind to continue to protect what they could from the still rising river crest and to perform those various administrative and governmental functions that needed to be done. On Thursday, April 24, government officials began to allow people back into the driest areas of town to visit their homes and begin the cleanup process. While the majority of the cleanup itself was finished by the end of the 1997 summer, reconstruction of destroyed basements, houses, and buildings has continued into 2000. In addition to these reconstruction efforts, the cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks have been developing flood abatement strategies, most notably a 54-foot dike system in Grand Forks and a Greenway along the Red River itself.
The 1997 Red River Valley Flood Collection spans the years 1997-1999 and documents the causes of the 1997 flood, the actual flood itself, and the recovery from the flood. The collection focuses on the flood primarily as related to the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks areas.
Items concerning the cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks or national coverage of the flood make up Series I of the collection. These materials include Flood Response and Protection Committee meeting minutes and supplementary materials, other city hall committee meeting minutes, press releases, newsletters, internet pages, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Greenway materials, individual flood responses, business and government flood responses, newspaper articles, and magazines.
Items concerning the University of North Dakota compose Series II. These materials include statements, correspondence, notices, memoranda, Administrative Group meeting notes, Transition Team materials, Chester Fritz Library materials, UND Plant Services materials, and information about flood grants and fellowships. Also included are Jan Orvik's book research materials consisting of interviews, book research materials, and various book drafts. Jan Orvik is co-manager of UND Info and writer/editor at University Relations.
Series III of the collection is composed of materials donated by Alan Draves. Alan Draves is an Ohio native who collected and donated a great store of material to the 1997 Red River Valley Flood Collection. This portion of the collection includes correspondence, web pages, United Lutheran Church and Nursery materials, business and organizational materials, newspaper clippings, newsletters, magazines, and photographs.
Series IV consists of CDROMs, CDs, and cassette tapes. It also includes a number of aerial photographs of Grand Forks taken during the flood, and numerous photographs taken either during the flood itself or during the recovery process, and some slide pictures of the same. Finally, this segment contains t-shirts, a sandbag, water cans and jugs, buttons, cups, and memorial bricks from Belmont and Lincoln elementary schools.
Series V contains oversize materials. These materials include Flood Response/Protection Committee meeting supplemental materials, maps, individual flood responses, magazines, Jan Orvik materials, Chester Fritz Library materials, Alan Draves materials, photograph prints, aerial photographs of towns along the Red River, and newspapers.
