INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: These additions to the James D. Barger, M.D. Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by M. Susan Barger, Santa Fe, New Mexico, on November 6, 1997 ( Acc.#97-2159); May 22, 1998 (Acc.# 98-2191); November 22, 1999 (Acc.# 99-2395); May 25, 2000 (Acc.#2000-2440); October 6, 2000 (Acc.# 2001-2486); April 4, 2001 (Acc.#2001-2527); June 2002 (Acc.#2003-2596); and February 18, 2003 (Acc.#2003-2620).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

These additions to the James D. Barger, M.D. Papers date from 1817-2003 and have been divided into three series as follows: professional, personal, and family.

Series I: Professional Materials
The professional series contains various materials, including professional correspondence, journal articles written by Dr. Barger, and the text of and notes for speeches delivered by Barger. Also included are notes and diaries from Dr. Barger's service in Bolivia as a member of the Office of Inter-American Affairs Mission, 1944-1945. In addition, there are papers regarding his involvement in the American Society of Clinical Pathology/College of American Pathologists, and newspaper clippings about his professional accomplishments. Papers related to his work at the Sunrise Hospital and Lab in Las Vegas, Nevada, are also included.

Series II: Personal Materials
This series includes Dr. Barger’s baby book which was kept by his mother and included various clippings and notes on events of his life. In addition, there are track medals, letters to and from Jane Ray, and material related to "L'Affaire"; during the early 1960s, the hospital administrator at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix took a dislike to Barger, causing him to resign in protest. Financial and home purchase materials, biographical material, and personal correspondence are also included. In addition, papers regarding Barger's 1975 Sioux Award, his 70th and 80th birthdays, and several different class reunions are included. The series also contains Dr. Barger’s daily planners from 1971-1992. Box 4, Folder 28 - Box 5, Folder 22

Series III: Family Materials
This series contains material regarding members of the Barger family, including: his father, Michael Thomas Barger, a banker in Linton, North Dakota; his mother, Mayte (Mary Margaret) Donohue, a house wife; and his brother Thomas Charles Barger, oil discoverer and Aramco vice- president and Chief Executive Officer. Also included is material related to Dr. Barger's wives and children. Box 6, Folder 1 - Box 6, Folder 18

These additions also contain more than 350 photographs. The photographs depict every aspect of Dr. Barger’s life, including his childhood, school years, war service in Bolivia, professional career, and adult years.
