ACQUISITION: The Tamar C. Read Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Tamar Read on June 24, 1996 (Accession # 96-2083).

ACCESS: Available for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

RELATED MATERIALS:Video tapes of the Ethnic Music Festival are housed in the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections. (V62-V80).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Tamar Clothylde Read was born and raised in Olla, Louisiana. She received a bachelors degree in music from LSU in 1942, and a masters degree in music education from the University of Michigan in 1945. She then spent eight years in New York City studying and participating in choruses and orchestras. Read taught at South Dakota State University for two years, and began teaching at the University of North Dakota in 1959 as an Associate Professor of Music. While at UND, she founded and directed the Collegium Musicum in 1963. Read obtained her Doctor of Musical Arts in 1969 from the University of Southern California by presenting her doctoral dissertation: A Critical Study and Performance Edition of Emilio de' Cavalieri's Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo. Tamar Read retired from UND in June of 1988.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Tamar C. Read Papers have been arranged into three series and then alphabetically within each series.

Series I, Biography and Musical Programs.

This series consists of biographical information, music programs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous musical materials.

Series II, Ethnic Music Festival.

The Ethnic Music Festival occurred in 1983 as part of UND's Centennial celebration. This series includes information on all participating ethnic groups, including Norwegian, Polish, German- Russian, Native American, French, and Danish. It also contains budget and grant materials, contracts, correspondence, programs, and general information pertaining to the festival.

Series III, Dissertation.

This series contains references and materials used for Tamar's doctoral dissertation: A Critical Study and Performance Edition of Emilio de' Cavalieri's Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo; including rough and final drafts, musical scores, translations, and correspondence.
