Theodore Mark "Ted" Kraker, the son of Mark and Grace (Jurgens) Kraker, was born April 7, 1920 in Wahpeton, North Dakota. The family moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1925. Ted attended St. Mary's Catholic School and then Central High School, where he graduated in 1938. In 1942, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of North Dakota. He then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as an air traffic controller in Clovis, New Mexico during World War II. When the war ended, Kraker returned to UND to study industrial arts education. He received a teacher's certificate in 1947. That same year, he opened his own business, Kraker's Kraft and Kabinet Kurios, in Grand Forks. The business closed a few years later. In 1948, Kraker began employment as a postal clerk in the Grand Forks Post Office, where he worked until his retirement. Kraker was actively involved in his union, the National Federation of Post Office Clerks, and in the Grand Forks Philatelic Society. He died in August 26, 1995 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks.
The Theodore Kraker Papers span the years 1882-1995 and document the activities of four North Dakota generations. The collection reflects changes in North Dakota family and community life throughout the 20th century. Documented families include Kraker, Formaneck, Jurgens and Chezik.
Items concerning Theodore "Ted" Kraker span the years 1927-1995. These include correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings, class notes, term papers, awards and certificates, diaries, journals, calendars and appointment books, and military training manuals and service records. Materials document Kraker's elementary and high school years, his World War II service in the U.S. Army Air Corps, his years as a student at the University of North Dakota and his employment at the Grand Forks Post Office. Kraker's business, Kraker's Kraft and Kabinet Kurios, and his activities in organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, the Grand Forks Philatelic Society and his labor union, the National Federation of Postal Workers, are documented as well.
Mark Kraker was Ted's father. Items relating to Mark Kraker and his family include certificates, correspondence, announcements, newspaper articles and obituaries, calendars and appointment books, memorial books, sympathy cards, journals, property records and legal and financial records. Subjects include Mark Kraker's employment at Great Northern Railroad and his World War I military service. Relatives of Mark Kraker represented in the collection include Mathias Kraker, Mark's father; Mary (Mischke) Kraker, Mark's mother; Henry and Math J. Kraker, Mark's brothers; Sophia Kraker, Mark's sister; Bernice "Bunny" Kraker, Mark's niece and Math's daughter, and Frank Mischke, Mark's uncle. Materials span the years 1910-1987.
Grace (Jurgens) Kraker was Ted's mother and Mark's wife. She was the daughter of Theodore Jurgens and Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens. Materials related to Grace (Jurgens) Kraker span 1905-1985. They include class notes, diplomas, address books, newspaper clippings, correspondence, financial records, calling cards, invitations, programs, dance cards, journals, membership cards and certificates, recipe books, memorial books and medical records. Grace (Jurgens) Kraker's youth in Wahpeton, North Dakota and her marriage and family life in Wahpeton and Grand Forks, North Dakota are well documented. Medical records record Grace's diabetic routine, and other materials reflect her activities in various organizations, including Women's Catholic Order of Forester, Lincoln Park Bridge Club, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Mary's Altar Society and the Thursday Music Club. Grace's diaries, spanning the years 1915- 1979, are especially notable. In her diaries, Grace recorded many events of her life, as well as her personal thoughts and insights.
Items relating to Theodore Jurgens and Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens, parents of Grace (Jurgens) Kraker, span the years 1895-1950 and include newspaper clippings, biographical essays, financial records, correspondence, journals, calling cards, memorial books, burial service papers and sympathy cards. These document family and community life in Wahpeton, North Dakota in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Theodore Jurgens' business activities are documented through seven business ledgers spanning the years 1887-1891. One ledger, spanning the years 1887-1890, documents Theodore Jurgens' saloon business, which he operated in Wahpeton beginning in 1886 and ending in 1890, when prohibition went into effect in North Dakota. Theodore Jurgens then formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Albert Formaneck, Jr., and the two opened the Jurgens and Formaneck Clothing Store in Wahpeton. Seven ledgers, spanning the years 1891-1901, and three folders of receipts dating from 1902 document this business venture.
Louis Jurgens, brother of Theodore, and Louis's wife, Tina Jurgens, are represented in materials spanning 1903-1976, including certificates and report cards, wedding announcements, correspondence and newspaper clippings.
Remaining materials document the Formaneck and Chezik families. (Two of Josephine Formaneck Jurgens' sisters married into the Chezik family.) These span 1882-1986 and include letters, biographical essays, correspondence, obituaries, newspaper clippings, calling cards, announcements, baptismal certificates, birth certificates, property records, and memorial cards and burial papers. Persons documented include:
Frank Formaneck (brother of Josephine Formaneck Jurgens)
Anna (Lawrence) Formaneck (wife of Frank Formaneck)
Henry Formaneck (son of Frank and Anna Formaneck; nephew of Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens)
Fred Formaneck (brother of Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens)
Albert Formaneck, Jr. (brother of Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens
Mary (Schild) Formaneck (wife of Albert Formaneck, Jr.)

Rosa (Formaneck) Chezik, (sister of Josephine (Jurgens) Formaneck and wife of Joseph Chezik)
Leo Chezik, (nephew of Josephine Jurgens Chezik, son of Joseph and Rosa (Formaneck) Chezik)
Albert Chezik, (brother-in-law of Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens, husband of Anna (Formaneck) Chezik, brother of Joseph Chezik, father of Vena Chezik)
Anna (Formaneck) Chezik, (sister of Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens, wife of Albert Chezik, mother of Vena Chezik)
Vena Chezik, (niece of Josephine (Formaneck) Jurgens, daughter of Albert and Anna (Formaneck) Chezik)
Three photo albums date from approximately 1905 - approximately the 1920's. The first album contains family portraits, including a 1908 portrait of Grace Jurgens Kraker. Photos in the second album span the years 1910-1914 and largely depict family trips. Locations include Pomona, Nirvina, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Redondo Beach, California; White Bear Lake in St. Paul, Minnesota; Palm Beach, Florida; and Venice, Italy. Photos in the third album are undated and unidentified. However, automobiles, clothing styles and other such items depicted would suggest an approximate date span of the 1910's-1920's. Photos largely depict family trips and family gatherings in unspecified locations.
The collection also contains one linear foot of unidentified photographic negatives, .5 feet of which are glass plate negatives. Negatives in the first folder appear to have been taken during World War I (presumably by Mark Kraker, who was a veteran of that war). These depict scenes of soldiers and the surrounding landscape. Some appear to depict a military training camp (presumably Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, where Mark Kraker underwent training.). All negatives are unidentified and undated, but appear to date from the 1910's-the 1920's. Generally, the negatives depict unidentified individuals, groups (many of which may be families) and activities such as picnics and fishing trips. There are some street scenes (presumably of Wahpeton, ND) and several images of people in automobiles. One glass plate negative depicts an aerial view of an unidentified city (possibly Wahpeton, North Dakota).
