HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Seventh Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry, or “Seventh Cavalry,” is best known as the regiment commanded by then-Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. The Seventh Cavalry was organized in 1866 and like all regiments of this time, it routinely maintained muster rolls. A muster roll is a record of all troops present at parade or review of troops.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The muster rolls cover the years 1866-1874 and 1879-1884. Materials are arranged chronologically. Commissioned and non-commissioned staff are listed separately. The commissioned staff list cites name (absent and present), rank, date of commission, station and remarks, which typically note information such as date of enlistment, previous regiment and assigned duties. The non-commissioned staff register lists names (present and absent), rank, date, place and length of enlistment, date and amount of last pay, name of paymaster and remarks.
