ACQUISITION: The Laura Green Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Wyman Sheppard, nephew of Laura Green, and his wife Alice, September 6, 1991 (Acc.# 91-1770). Wyman Sheppard is the grandson of George Aker. Wyman's father is Clarence Sheppard, who owned the Model Steam Laundry .

Laura Green was born September 24, 1876. Her father, George Aker, and his wife came to Dakota Territory by covered wagon. They built a cabin in 1870 in what is now the Riverside Park area of Grand Forks, North Dakota. They are believed to be the first white family to settle in Grand Forks. As the town grew became the Superintendent of Water Works and served in that capacity for a number of years.
Laura Green graduated from Grand Forks High School in 1893. In 1898 she married Robert Green, a prominent contractor in Grand Forks. She was an active charter member of the Congregational Church, now known as the Federated Church. She worked in the office of the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce when it was first organized. She served as secretary of the Public Welfare Association for many years, worked with the original Community House and was on the board of the YMCA for 7-8 years. She was also especially active in Red Cross work and also active in the Masonic Lodge, the Community Chest Organization for about 11 years. Laura Green died November 22, 1969.
Materials found in the collection served as the source of biographical information.
The Laura Green Papers consist of one folder, dating from 1870-1969. The material includes notes written by friends and/or relatives relating to Laura Green's life story, information found through an interview with her, and a copy of her obituary. There is also a copy of an article from the Grand Forks Herald and a page copied from a book that make reference to her father.
46 photographs in the Laura Green Papers have been separated and added to the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection. All the photographs except the picture of the cabin are accompanied by a negative. Most are photographs taken in Grand Forks but a few were taken in other parts of North Dakota and Minnesota.
A taped interview with Laura Green has been separated and placed in the Audio-Visual Collection as #947.
