Louis W. Veigel was born in Dickinson, North Dakota on July 9, 1909. He earned a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from the University of North Dakota in 1930. In 1933, he was appointed Dickinson's City Engineer. He married Mary Ellen Kelly in 1939, and the two had four children. From 1933 to 1955 (except for two years during World War II, when he repaired ships for the U.S. Navy) Veigel served as Dickinson's City Engineer and, occasionally, as an engineer for Stark County, North Dakota. Afterward, he worked as a consultant for many North Dakota cities and counties until his retirement in 1982. Veigel served terms as President of the North Dakota Water and Sewage Works Conference and as President of the North Dakota Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. In the 1960s, he served a term on the North Dakota Parks Commission.
After retirement, Louis and Mary Ellen Veigel produced a weekly newsletter for their children, with Louis acting as editor and Mary Ellen serving as publisher. The newsletter contained articles on family history and activities, and included commentaries on local, national and international events. Newsletters were published from August 27, 1980 through December 24, 1990. Louis Veigel died on December 25, 1995.
The Veigel Newsletters are arranged chronologically and date from 1980-1990. The collection represents a complete run of the publication. Recurring subjects include family histories, oil drilling in the Dickinson area, family trips, obituaries, and the Killdeer Mountains. Articles often comment on local, national and international events.
