ACQUISITION: The Emil Odegard Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection as a gift of Pauline Cooper, renter of 504 Chestnut Street, Grand Forks, May 29, l990 (Acc # 90-1706).
ACCESS: Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.
Emil O. Odegard was born on May 17, 1884, to Andrew and Ingre Odegard on their farm in Polk County, MN. After his father's death in 1893, the family moved to Grand Forks, ND, where Emil graduated from Grand Forks High School in 1904 and attended the University of North Dakota. Emil began working at the Grand Forks Street Railway Company in June, 1909. He started as a bookkeeper and in l927 became general manager of the company
On June 25, 1913, Emil married Margreta Sande. They met while she was employed at a bank in Grand Forks. They had three children, Ruth Elaine, Helen Agnes, and Jean Marguerite. The family resided at 504 Chestnut Street, Grand Forks. Emil was a member of Banner Lodge No. 4, I.O.O.F., and was on the auditorium committee for the Norwegian Singers Association in l916.
The Emil Odegard Papers include correspondence between Emil Odegard and Margreta Sande during their courtship and early married life between 1909 and 1915. The letters are of a personal nature and do not mention Emil's work at the Grand Forks Street Railway, Co.
The collection also includes commencement programs from Grand Forks High School, 1895-1909, books and song books written in Norwegian, a program for the Norwegian Singers Association of America 13th Biennial Sangerfest, 1916, and photographs. Eight photographs were separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection. Other unidentified photographs remain with the collection. The photographs are of family members and friends.
