BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

William Julison was born August 30, 1916 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the fifth of six children born to Gustav and Marie Anne Scherer Julissen (Yulissen). Gustav, a German-from- Russia, was born near Tallinn, Estonia, August 17, 1867 and Marie Anne in Selz, Russia, December 2, 1877. Gustav was pressed into the Russian Army at age 15 and met Marie in Odessa while working one of Czar Nicholas' many estates near Odessa. They were married in 1902 and lived in the village of Mixtov where their first three children were born. Gustav saw service in the Russian-Japanese War of 1904. He immigrated with his family to the United States June 30, 1906 via Antwerp, Belgium and Quebec, Canada and arrived in Neche, North Dakota September 1, 1906. The family moved to Grand Forks shortly thereafter to join sponsoring relatives, Marie's parents, Barbara and Joseph Scherer. Gustav worked for the Great Northern Railroad for 35 years as a section hand and then a car repairman. Gustav died in Grand Forks February 3, 1948 and Marie Anne June 28, 1950.

William Julison grew up in the Dyke Avenue/Washington Street neighborhood of Grand Forks. He graduated from Central High School in 1934 and then worked for Griffith's Department Store and odd jobs until the fall of 1937 when he enrolled at the University of North Dakota majoring in art and journalism. He left UND Spring semester 1939 because of unsatisfactory scholarship and went to live with his sister Mary who was teaching in Milwaukee. Unable to find work, Julison enrolled in Company 1604 CCC Camp, Gays Mills, Wisconsin on July 30, 1939. He joined other CCC men who were in the same boat "coming from big families, no jobs, and disgusted with hard times." He participated in a variety of work: Soil Conservation Service topographical projects, limestoning, and KP, latrine, and dispensary duty. He was also a columnist and the cartoonist for the Camp's daily newspaper Kickapoojian. Julison was discharged from Company 1604 CCC Camp on June 30, 1941 and the Camp was disbanded in July 1942.

Julison registered for the Draft at Company 1604 CCC Camp on October 15, 1940. Instead of having his induction papers transferred to North Dakota, he chose to join some of his CCC enrollees and was inducted August 3, 1941 at Prairie Du Chein, Wisconsin. He received his basic training at Camp Grant, Illinois and then was stationed at Chanute Field, Illinois, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Harding, Louisiana. He was sent overseas in December of 1944. He served in England and France and then spent approximately one year in Germany where his knowledge of the German language enabled him to serve as an interpreter. He also worked in the air disarmament program decoding Nazi aircraft development secrets. Throughout his five years in the Army, Julison was also a cartoonist/illustrator for army post newspapers, worked in public relations, and produced art work for various projects. He was awarded an ETO Certificate of Merit and a Bronze Star and was discharged May 16, 1946 as a Master Sergeant.

Julison spent the summer of 1946 working for the Progress, a weekly newspaper in Dawson Springs, Kentucky before joining the Grand Forks Herald as a sports writer and cartoonist. He established a free-lance illustration/commercial art service shop called the Art Mart in 1956 contracting work in illustrating, designing, printing, cartooning, photo-retouching, posters, and T.V. slides. He maintained this business at several downtown locations before moving it to his home in 1967.

Julison never married, however nurtured close ties with his extended family, especially his nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Grand Forks Quarterback Club, the American Foreign Legion, and was a lover of classical music, a sports enthusiast, and a silent western movie buff. William Julison died July 1, 1988.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The William Julison Papers date from the early 1900's to 1988, although the bulk of the material dates from the 1930's. The papers originally measured 62.5 linear feet and were completely unorganized. Therefore, at the time of acquisition, it was deemed expedient to do only a cursory appraisal of the material on site. Upon processing, the papers were reduced to 29.25 linear feet and were rearranged to reflect Julison's personal life, his work as a commercial artist/cartoonist, and his interest in sports and silent western films. The Julison Papers are arranged into five series.

SERIES I: PERSONAL AND FAMILY
Sub-Series A: Julison Family

This sub-series includes Yulissen/Schall-Scherer genealogical and family history information. The families were from Tallinn, Estonia and Selz, South Russia respectively. The Jacob Schall (1751-1821) Family of Kaidenburg, Alsace-France, was one of the Kutschurean colonists who founded Selz, South Russia in 1808. This subseries also contains biographical information and miscellaneous papers and school certificates for Julison, his brothers, and sister Mary who graduated from UND in 1925.

Correspondence for the collection has not been designated a separate series, but rather has been interfiled in each series as is appropriate. Thus, the Julison Family subseries includes selected outgoing correspondence in which Julison reflects upon his life, and his letters written to the editor of the Grand Forks Herald and to family and friends. Much of this correspondence interestingly details childhood play and sports activities in Grand Forks in the 1920's and 1930's. Personal and family photographs have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection. Family photograph albums have been placed in oversized boxes and are inventoried under the oversize materials.

Sub-Series B: Civilian Conservation Corps
Materials in this sub-series relate to Julison's twenty-three month stint of service in Company 1604 CCC Camp, Gays Mills, Wisconsin, July 30, 1939-June 30, 1941. The materials include two historical sketches of Company 1604. Donald Niendorf, a Camp superintendent, wrote a brief history in 1966 for the Camp's first reunion held at Kankakee, Illinois and Julison produced a pictorial booklet for the 50th anniversary of Company 1604 held at Gays Mills, Wisconsin, 1983. The sub-series also includes general historical information of the Civilian Conservation Corps; original copies of Company 1604 CCC Camp newsletter, Kickapoojian, August 1940 to June 1941; Company 1604 memorabilia; correspondence regarding the writing of Julison's historical 50th anniversary booklet, his orders for CCC buttons which he designed and fashioned, and general correspondence from various ex-CCCers; and newsletters from the Brotherhood of XCCCers and Potomac Chapter 13. A scrapbook documenting the history of Company 1604 CCC Camp has been placed with the oversize material. Photographs depicting life at Company 1604 have been separated from the collection and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection. Issues of the NACCCA Journal, September 1979-June 1988 have been catalogued for the North Dakota Book Collection.

Sub-Series C: World War II
Sub-series C consists of materials collected during Julison's active duty years in the United States Army during World War II and more recent newspaper articles about both World War I and II. Included is Julison's diary of his service years, 1941-1946, personal documents, correspondence, and miscellaneous items. Separated and placed in oversize boxes are scrapbooks containing news clippings which recorded the names of those men from the Grand Forks area who entered service, were on furlough, or were wounded or killed in action; approximately two years of the Airplane Mechanic, the Lincoln Army/Air Base newspaper, August 1942-April 1944; random editions of other military newspapers; and Julison's caricature drawings of his fellow servicemen. World War II photographs have been placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection.

Sub-Series D: Germans-from-Russia
This sub-series contains information about Germans-from-Russia who migrated in large numbers from the Black Sea area of Russia to Dakota Territory in 1873 and after. Julison was a member of the Deutsche Kinder Chapter of the Germans-from-Russia Heritage Society founded on January 9, 1971 under the name North Dakota Historical Society of Germans-from-Russia. The name was changed to its present form on July 14, 1979. Its headquarters is in Bismarck, North Dakota. The Grand Forks Chapter was formed in 1977. Items included in this series are membership lists, correspondence, newsletters, convention brochures, publication lists, and art work produced by Julison for the brochure of the Society's 10th annual convention held in Grand Forks in 1980. The materials date from 1967 to 1988.

SERIES II: ART MART-COMMERCIAL ART SHOP
Materials in this series document Julison's commercial art shop business and date from 1956 to 1988. Financial records include invoice statements, 1956-1988, which reveal the variety of Julison's business, tax returns, 1951-1983, an account book, October 1956-December 1974, plus check stubs and bank statements, 1956-1988.

Julison's largest account was with Reddick & Lystad's, later Lystad's, Inc. from 1954 until 1984. His services included the creation and updating of the company's logo and the illustration of company newsletters, sales promotions, and sales training materials. A compulsive clipper, Julison often adapted cartoons, humorous material, and sketches from national periodicals and local newspapers for his design ideas. The material is comprised of these design ideas, incoming and outgoing correspondence with Lystads, the company's bi-monthly bulletin "Squeak", May 1981-November 1984, and staffing information for the years 1958, 1962, 1965, and 1973. The latter provides a general idea of the expansion of Lystad's for those inclusive years. Photographs of Lystad employees and products have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection.

The remainder of Series II consists of examples of Julison's commercial art work. These have been categorized into rough subject areas which have been alphabetized. Julison's sketch books, loose sketches, and menus which he designed for several Grand Fork's restaurants have been placed with the oversize material.

SERIES III: SPORTS
William Julison and his brothers, Steve and Adam, were active in hockey and softball in Grand Forks for over forty years, both as team members on local and state championship teams in the 1930's and 1940's and as team sponsors in the 1960's. William sponsored the Art Mart softball team in the Commercial League and Adam sponsored the Adam's Place team in the City League. Adam's Place won the state softball championship in 1965. Steve and Adam played hockey for various Grand Forks teams, the Dragons and Junior Dragons, Grand Forks Central, the Cavaliers, and the Flyers. William was manager of the Grand Forks American Legion Post 6 Amerks team in the States Dominion Hockey League, 1947-1950.

Series III provides information on most sports played in Grand Forks and to some extent at UND. The material particularly documents the years of the 20's, 30's, and 40's and is arranged alphabetically by sport with emphasis on softball, hockey, and to a lesser degree on football. The materials include correspondence, team rosters, handbills, newspaper clippings, Julison's sports illustrations and historical booklets, and memorabilia. Sports photographs are extensive and have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection. Several scrapbooks have been placed with the oversize material.

The softball portion of the series contains Julison's "Greater Grand Forks Softball History Album" which he compiled and published in 1978. It traces the organization of the sport from the early days of "Kittenball" in the 1920's through the organization of leagues and the establishment of a North Dakota Softball Hall of Fame. Both Steve and Adam Julison are members of the Hall of Fame.

This section also provides information on Eddie Feigner, the King and His Court, a professional exhibition softball team who appeared numerous times in Grand Forks in the 1960's and 1970's. Julison, a fan and supporter, designed logos and local promotional items for Feigner, worked on an idea for a softball board game, and designed an Eddie Feigner comic book. It was submitted to Dell Publishing Co., but never published.

Julison documented the history of local hockey in his "Greater Grand Forks Hockey Album" compiled and published in 1974. Items integral to its compilation are found in the collection, as well as information regarding the inception of the North Dakota Hockey Hall of Fame and Memento Museum at Grand Forks September 11, 1975. Julison was a co-founder of the Hall of Fame along with J.A. (Lottie) Wambach and Cliff (Fido) Purpur and Julison's Art Mart housed the display. Julison compiled and published a booklet entitled "Clifford J. Fido Purpur: North Dakota's Only National Hockey Leaguer". Purpur left Grand Forks in 1931 and played for the Minneapolis Millers, S. Louis Eagles and Flyers in the 1930's and for the Chicago Black Hawks, 1941-1945.

The majority of the football material consists of Julison's illustration work and his "Sportraits". The "Redskins Sports Review" and accompanying documentation was compiled in 1986 for Central High School's centennial celebration. He also illustrated Ben Hokum's "Powerful Golf for Men Past 40" in 1958.

SERIES IV: GRAND FORKS AND NORTH DAKOTA
Series IV contains Julison's illustration work and newspaper articles, newspaper clippings, and miscellany. Subject areas included are Grand Forks Schools: Belmont, Winship, Grand Forks High School, and the Academy of St. James; Grand Forks and Fargo theaters; Carl Ben Eielson; Hazel Minor, Center, North Dakota; and General George Custer. Photographs have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection.

SERIES V: SILENT WESTERN MOVIES
After Julison's mother died in 1950, he rediscovered his old movie scrapbooks assembled in his youth in the 1920's. He was an avid movie-goer with a fascination for the Wild West and especially enjoyed silent westerns. Series V reflects Julison's renewed hobby and contains correspondence, his illustration work, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook of western stars, photographs, dealers mailings, and newsletters and publications geared towards western film fans. It includes only two pressbooks and no films.

The correspondence was carried on with western movie buffs, primarily across the United States, but also scattered around the world, and is extensive. It dates from 1968 to 1981 and is both incoming and outgoing as Julison made carbon copies of much of his correspondence. The letters reveal not only facts and myths about silent western movie stars, but also glimpses into each correspondent's personal life. It is separated by collectors and dealers and filed alphabetically within each category by surname, if the correspondence was sufficient in volume. Foreign correspondence is arranged by geographical area and alphabetically within each area. Orders for Julison's western buttons and pictorials are separated.

Julison produced a number of items for sale to collectors. All portrayed silent western film stars and included photo buttons, poster-size biographical pictorials, arcade post-cards, and a booklet "The Silent Guns: Pre-Sound Stars of the Silver Screen Who Pioneered Western Motion Pictures", 1976. A sampling of stars portrayed include Art Acord, Yakima Canutt, Buck Jones, Max Terhune, Ken Maynard, Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson, Bob Steele, and Buffalo Bill, Jr. Photographs depicting a good representation of American television series, movies, and stars from 1973 to 1975 have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photographic Collection.

The photographs in the William Julison Papers have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection. The photographs were received in an unorganized manner and were rearranged by subject. The subject headings include: Personal and Family, Art Mart-Lystad Account, Sports, Grand Forks and North Dakota, Silent Western Stars, and Television and Movie promotional photographs.
