ACQUISITION: The Jerald Quam Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Jerald Quam, Hendrum, Minnesota on July 28, 1987, November 3, 1987 and May 4, 1988 (Acc.#, 87-1569, 88-1599).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Jerald Quam was born on January 31, 1942 in Fargo, North Dakota. He has been involved in the automobile business since 1963. He was worked for various dealerships throughout the Red River Valley, including Fargo, as well as Hendrum and Ada, Minnesota. Quam has also been involved in automobile racing. Beginning in the early 1970s, he has raced on numerous courses through the region, including West Fargo, Grand Forks and Jamestown, North Dakota, as well as Glyndon, Minnesota.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Jerald Quam Papers consist of material relating to the Grand Forks Speedway, and automobile racing in North Dakota. Included are issues of Inside Track magazine, dedicated to racing in North Dakota. Also included are several racing programs, entitled Greater Grand Forks Speedway. There is an issue of a nationally published magazine entitled Open Wheel, which contains an article on the Grand Forks Speedway on page 62. Also included are several issues of Pride 'n Joy, a collector car magazine published in Valley City, North Dakota.

75 photographs were separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection. The photographs depict the Grand Forks Speedway, as well as the drivers and cars that raced there.

The Grand Forks Speedway was constructed as a Works Progress Administration project in 1937. Over twenty thousand people attended the dedication of the speedway, presided over by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on October 4, 1937. The track was renovated in the 1950s, and is still used every Friday during the summer for races.
