HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Pioneer Reading Club was founded in 1885, and was the first women's club in Grand Forks. The group sought the “mutual advancement of its members in general literature,” according to its constitution. Candidates for membership were proposed by a committee who would vouch for them, and could only be elected through a unanimous vote of those present. In 1885, membership was capped at twelve, although by 1900 this limit had been rescinded. Regular meetings were held every Monday afternoon, and usually consisted of the reading and discussion of literature.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Pioneer Reading Club Records consists of one hardback journal containing the constitution and meeting minutes, from September 1899 through May 13, 1901. Also included is an article from the Grand Forks Herald, written by W.P. Davies. The article discusses the history of the Pioneer Reading Club.
