BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Theodore Pedeliski was born in April 1936, in Belfield, North Dakota, to Nicholas and Polly (Logosz) Pedeliski. His father was a teacher at Murphy School, a rural school in Billings County, North Dakota. Nicholas Pedeliski taught his son, Theodore Pedeliski, for seven years at this school. He attended Dickinson State Teachers College, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957. After graduation, Pedeliski taught English at a high school in Napoleon, North Dakota, before being entering the United States Army. He served with the Army as Post Librarian at Kagnew Station in Asmara, Ethiopia, from 1959-1961.

After being discharged from the U.S. Army, Pedeliski taught for two years at the Division of Independent Study in Fargo. He next enrolled at the University of North Dakota, and earned a Master's Degree in Political Science in 1965. He next attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1972. The title of his doctoral dissertation was “The States and Criminal Justice Policies 1960-1970: Orientations Toward Due Process and Crime Control.”

Pedeliski returned to UND in 1969 to become an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1973, and achieved tenure in 1975. He was named a full Professor in 1988. He was awarded emeritus status following his retirement from the University in 2000.

While a faculty member at the University, Pedeliski served on many committees and was nominated for the Best Teaching Award. He was the producer of the radio program Jazz Streams on KFJM, in addition to a presence on the radio station as a commentator. He authored several publications for the UND Bureau of Governmental Affairs, co-authored the book Public Personnel Administration: Confronting the Challenges of Change in 1996, and was a frequent presenter at scholarly conferences. Pedeliski also wrote A Tour of St. Michael’s Church in 2001.

Pedeliski received a 1995-1996 American Judicature Society Award from the American Political Science Association, and was inducted into the North Dakota Ukrainian Hall of Fame in 2001. This honor was based on his contributions to the history of Ukrainians in North Dakota.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Theodore Pedeliski Papers date from 1920-2000, and are divided into three series as follows:

Series I: Pre-Professional Work
Box 1, Folder 1- Box 1, Folder 10

This series includes papers written by Pedeliski under various auspices, including his Master of Arts Thesis which was submitted to the University of North Dakota in 1965, and his Doctoral Dissertation which was submitted to the University of Minnesota in 1972.

Series II: Professional Work
Box 1, Folder 11- Box 2, Folder 29

This series is divided into four sub-series. Sub-series A includes materials directly related to classes Theodore Pedeliski taught in Political Science at the University of North Dakota. These materials are primarily hypothetical legal cases which Pedeliski used as assignments for students in his Constitutional Law classes. This sub-series also includes a few real Constitutional Law cases which were given to students to evaluate. Sub-series B consists of presentations Pedeliski gave at various conferences and meetings. Many of these relate to the politics of North Dakota and Minnesota, as well as the ethnic groups in that region of the country. Sub-series C contains papers written by Pedeliski during his professional career. The subject matter of these papers is very similar to that of Pedeliski's presentations, focusing on political science topics related primarily to North Dakota, and also focusing on the Ukrainians as an ethnic group in North Dakota. This sub-series also contains a number of drafts of a paper about the court system of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and its response to the flood of 1997. Sub-series D consists of Theodore Pedeliski's published materials. Included within this sub-series are a number of manuscripts, both preliminary and final, as well as periodicals featuring articles written by Pedeliski. This sub-series also contains an instructor's manual written by Pedeliski to accompany a political science textbook.

Series III: Personal Interests and Research
Box 2, Folder 30- Box 4, Folder 97

This series is divided into four sub-series. Sub-series A consists of research Pedeliski did regarding the politics of North Dakota. Included is a series of materials related to the book The Politics of North Dakota 1890-1962 which was written by two political scientists, Ray A. Goldberg and Charles Press. Also contained in this sub-series are supplementary materials relating to North Dakota politics including newspaper and magazine articles, papers, handwritten notes, correspondence, and official government documents. Sub-series B includes materials directly related to women in North Dakota politics. There are a number of documents related to Brynhild Haugland, a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives. These documents include the program from a testimonial dinner in her honor, copies of letters stating awards she had received (including a letter from President Nixon), and articles from newspapers and magazines about her. Also included in the sub-series are two copies of newspaper articles about Ruth Meiers and Nellie Dougherty. Sub-series C consists of general research into the matter of ethnicity and nationality in North Dakota. Materials in this sub-series vary from Federal Census Data to recipes. Sub-series D includes research into specific ethnic groups found in North Dakota including the Ukrainians, the Czechoslovakians, the Polish, and the Germans from Russia. These materials consist of personal accounts, oral histories, correspondence, pamphlets and booklets, newspaper and magazine articles, and handwritten notes.
