HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Grand Forks Federation of Clubs was organized on April 2, 1897. Common usage as found in the Grand Forks Illustrated indicates, however, that the club was referred to as the Grand Forks Federation of Women's Clubs. The Federation’s objective was “to bring the numerous clubs of Grand Forks into closer and more sympathetic relations, in the hope that each may profit by a better knowledge of the work of the other, and also to serve as a means of communication and the prosecution of any work of common interest.” The first officers were: Madam Bushee, President; Mrs. C. C. Gowran, Vice President; Mrs. J. N. Kelly, Secretary; Mrs. H. L. Whithed, Treasurer. Twelve clubs joined as charter members of the Federation: Pioneer Reading Club, No Name Club, S. I. Club, Athenaeum Reading Club, Current Topics Club, Wise and Otherwise, Mother’s Club, Riverside Club, Tourists’ Club, Omega Club, Poet’s Club, Monday Club.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Grand Forks Federation of Clubs Records consist of two records books. Book one contains the constitution and minutes (1897-1902), and book two contains minutes (1902-1904). Minutes include lists of member clubs’ executive officers, members and activities.
