Fred G. Aandahl Collection of Books on the Great Plains

Fred G. Aandahl was born near Litchville, North Dakota in 1897, the son and grandson of Barnes County pioneers. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1921 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts, and a major in law and minors in history and economics. Aandahl farmed near Litchville and served as a state senator, 1931-32 and 1939-42; Governor of North Dakota, 1945-50; member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 1951-53; and Assistant Secretary of the Interior under President Eisenhower, 1953-61. Throughout his life, Aandahl contributed and demonstrated a sincere devotion to his native state of North Dakota. Fred G. Aandahl died in 1966.

The Fred G. Aandahl Collection of Books on the Great Plains was established in 1968 by Aandahl's widow, Luella Brekke Aandahl, and daughters, Louise Aandahl Stockman, Margaret Aandahl Moran, and Marilyn Aandahl Johnson. The Collection of more than 1,800 volumes acquires books on the Northern Great Plains primarily in the areas of western and agricultural history, politics, Native-American studies, and regional literature. Novels, histories, memoirs, journals and biographies are among the type of books included.
