HISTORICAL SKETCH

The University of North Dakota has been led by ten presidents since its founding in 1883:
William M. Blackburn: 1884-1885
Homer B. Sprague: 1887-1891
Webster Merrifield: 1891-1909
Frank McVey: 1909-1917
Thomas F. Kane: 1918-1933
John C. West: 1933-1954
George Starcher: 1954-1971
Thomas Clifford: 1971-1992
Kendall Baker: 1992-1999
Charles Kupchella: 1999-present

The University was also served by Interim Presidents Henry Montgomery from 1885-1887, and Earle J. Babcock from 1917-1918.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This first donation of President's Office Records dates from 1885-1973, and consists primarily of correspondence. Arranged first are official memorandums received by the UND President from the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. These memos date from 1948-1971, and cover most conceivable aspects of University and State Board business, budgetary and financial concerns, and planning.

 

Arranged second is correspondence to and from the UND President and various Commissioners of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. The correspondence dates from 1943-1971. As with the memorandum, the subjects of the letters are truly wide ranging.

 

The third section contains correspondence of UND Presidents John C. West (1933-1954) and George Starcher (1954-1971). These files have been arranged alphabetically. In some instances, the correspondence was filed by the last name of the letter writer, although a fair amount of folders were arranged according to the subject of the letter.

 

The fourth section consists of various university reports. Included are reports of the Board of Regents/Trustees, 1888-1914, Biennial Reports of the University of North Dakota, 1922-1956, and Reports of the President, 1885-1886 and 1954-1973.

 

The final section includes miscellaneous material in the form of appointment books, UND commencement programs, inauguration programs, and various publications.
