ACQUISITION: This addition to the Carleton Elliott Simensen Military Heritage Collection, 164th Infantry Association Records was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by James Fenelon, Marshalltown, Iowa on July 15, 1997 (Acc.#97-2131).
ACCESS: Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.
This addition to the 164th Infantry Association dates from 1942-1996 and consists of seven folders. The first folder consists of correspondence to members of the 164th notifying them of upcoming events they may attend. The second folder consists of newspaper clippings from The Des Moines Register and The Minneapolis Star Tribune. These articles tell of veterans of the 164th looking back at their experiences during the war. The third folder consists of the November 1992 issue of The Straight Arrow, and two copies of the August 1992 issue of The Nodak Guardsman. The fourth folder contains a book entitled Fighting on Guadalcanal which was issued by the United States Government and contains stories and suggestions by soldiers fighting on Guadalcanal. The fifth folder contains a book entitled New Caledonia, which was written to give Americans a better understanding of New Caledonia and its customs. It was purchased overseas by Jim Fenelon. The sixth folder contains the poem "The Fighting 164" by Ira Keeney, which tells of the experiences overseas by the 164. The seventh folder contains two lists of the members of the 164th Infantry and booklets from two of their reunions.
